Why this pile-up happens in the first place

If you manage client accounts through your own personal Business Page instead of each client having a proper Business Portfolio, every project adds you to one more place. Nobody removes you when the relationship ends — there's no prompt for it, no reminder, nothing forces the cleanup. A few years in, "Businesses" in your Meta settings reads like a client list you forgot you had.

When I actually tried to leave the ones I don't work with anymore, three distinct things blocked me. Not vague errors — specific, repeatable reasons, each with its own fix.

Blocker 1 — You only have Basic or Employee access

If the business only ever gave you limited access (not full admin), you can't remove yourself. Only someone with Full Control on that Business Portfolio has the ability to remove people — including removing you.

1
Check your access level first

Business Settings → People → find your own name. If it says "Partial access / Basic" instead of "Full access / Everything," this is your blocker.

2
Ask an actual admin to remove you

There's no self-serve path here. Message whoever has Full Control on that portfolio and ask them to remove your email from People on their end.

Blocker 2 — You're the only Full Control admin

This one is sneaky because it doesn't look like it's blocking you. You click "Remove from business portfolio," confirm, the dialog closes like it worked — and then you reload the page and you're still sitting right there with full access. No error message anywhere.

Why it happens: Meta won't let a business drop to zero admins. If you're the only person with Full Control, removing yourself would leave nobody able to manage it — so the action silently doesn't take effect.
1
Add someone else as a Full Control admin first

Business Settings → People → Add People → their email → toggle Full Control. Have them accept the invite.

2
Then remove yourself

Once someone else holds Full Control, the same "Remove from business portfolio" action will actually go through.

3
Nobody left to add?

If this is an old, dead project with no other real owner, you're not trying to leave anymore — you're trying to delete the whole thing. That's Blocker 3.

Blocker 3 — There's a Pixel attached

This is the one that actually stopped me cold. I tried to permanently delete an old, completely dormant Business Portfolio — zero activity, no integrations, nothing connected to it. Meta's own dialog said no, and named the exact reason:

Meta's message, word for word: "You can't delete a business portfolio that has Pixels attached to it. Removal of Pixels is not supported at the moment."

That's not a setting I missed. Meta currently has no self-service way to fully delete a Pixel from a Business Portfolio, full stop — only to deactivate it by pulling its code off the website and disconnecting any integrations. And you cannot delete a Business Portfolio while a Pixel is still attached to it.

1
Check for a Pixel before you try to delete anything

Business Settings → that portfolio → Events Manager → Datasets. If a Pixel is listed, deletion is off the table for now.

2
If it's dormant, leaving it alone is fine

An empty, self-owned portfolio with no one else in it isn't a security risk — it's just a name sitting in a list. Not worth chasing.

3
Want it gone anyway?

Disconnect the Pixel from any site or integration it still touches (this won't unlock deletion, it just stops it collecting data), or contact Meta Support directly and ask them to remove it manually.

The fast way to sort your own list

Before you try to leave any business, check these in order:

1
What's your access level?

Basic/Employee → stop, you need an admin to remove you (Blocker 1).

2
Are you the only Full Control admin?

If yes → add someone else first, or it's a delete situation (Blocker 2).

3
Trying to delete instead of leave?

Check for a Pixel first (Blocker 3) before you waste time on the delete flow.

The actual fix going forward, if you manage multiple clients: stop collecting Business Portfolio People-access across every client you take on. Have each client keep their own Business Portfolio, and connect through Partners instead of adding your personal profile as a Person — one relationship to manage per client, and one place to revoke it when the work ends, instead of hunting through a list of 80+ businesses years later.
