This is a different problem than a failed setup
Most Instagram connection guides cover the "already connected to a different Page" error — a one-time setup mistake. This is not that. This is an account that was working, and then stopped, seemingly on its own. That's a different cause entirely, and it's much more common than people realize once an account has been live for a while.
Reason 1 — Access tokens expire on a rolling cycle
Meta access tokens have a built-in lifespan of roughly 60 days. This isn't a security flag or a sign something is wrong with your account — it's routine. When the token expires, Meta Business Suite silently drops the connection and asks you to "review" it, which really just means "reconnect."
Fix: Go to Meta Business Suite → Settings → Instagram accounts, click the disconnected account, and follow the reconnect prompt. It takes under a minute. There's nothing to diagnose — just reconnect and move on.
Reason 2 — A password or permission change on the linked Facebook Page
If the admin of the connected Facebook Page changes their password, or if permissions on the Page get edited, the Instagram link can silently break as a side effect — even though the change had nothing to do with Instagram directly.
Fix: Same as above — reconnect through Settings → Instagram accounts. If it won't reconnect, confirm the person reconnecting still has Admin (not Editor) access to the Facebook Page.
Reason 3 — Browser cache or cookies
Occasionally the disconnect notice is a display bug, not a real disconnection. Before assuming the account needs a full reconnect, try loading Meta Business Suite in an incognito or private window. If the account shows as connected there, clear your browser's cache and cookies for facebook.com.
How to stop it from catching you off guard
You can't prevent the 60-day token cycle — it's built into how Meta's system works. What you can do is check your connection status every month or two as a habit, rather than discovering it's broken right when you're about to post or launch a campaign.
